Creative Hobbies May Boost Well-Being

Painting, knitting, woodworking, pottery and other creative hobbies may offer benefits beyond simply passing the time. Research suggests that making art or crafting may be associated with greater happiness, life satisfaction and a stronger sense that life is worthwhile.

A 2024 study published in Frontiers in Public Health analyzed data from more than 7,000 adults in England to examine the relationship between creative activities and well-being. Researchers looked at participation in arts and crafts alongside measures including happiness, anxiety, loneliness and overall life satisfaction.

Even after accounting for factors such as age, employment and health, participation in arts and crafts was associated with greater happiness, life satisfaction and a stronger sense of meaning in life. The researchers noted that creative activities may be especially valuable because many are relatively inexpensive and accessible.

Creative hobbies can also provide opportunities for concentration, learning and self-expression. Whether someone enjoys painting, sewing, pottery, woodworking or simply trying a new craft, setting aside time to make something may be one enjoyable way to support overall well-being.
